How Somatropin Works

Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone produced by rDNA technology. It is a 191 amino acid polypeptide with the same sequence as the growth hormone released by the anterior pituitary, which is what allows it to bind the growth hormone receptor with full activity.

Growth hormone acts in two ways. Some effects are direct, on the receptor itself, including its influence on lipolysis in adipose tissue. Most of the growth-related effects are indirect, mediated by insulin-like growth factor 1, which the liver produces in response to growth hormone. That split is the reason IGF-1 is measured as a proxy for growth hormone activity rather than growth hormone itself, whose pulsatile release makes a single reading close to meaningless.

The lyophilised format exists for stability. Freeze-dried somatropin is stable for far longer than a solution, which is why it ships as a powder and is reconstituted immediately before a period of use rather than at the point of manufacture.

Why it matters: the 191 amino acid chain is identical to the growth hormone the pituitary produces. Some lower-grade material uses a 192 amino acid sequence carrying an extra methionine, which is recognised as foreign more readily and has been associated with antibody formation and falling response over time.

💉 RECONSTITUTION GUIDE
Step 1: Draw 1ml of the supplied bacteriostatic water into a sterile syringe
Step 2: Inject it slowly against the inside wall of the vial. Do not spray it directly onto the powder
Step 3: Let it dissolve on its own, swirling gently if needed. Never shake it
Step 4: Refrigerate the reconstituted vial at 2 to 8°C and use it within 28 days
Resulting concentration: at 1ml per 10IU vial, 0.1ml is 1IU. On a 100 unit insulin syringe that is 10 units per IU. The 10ml of bacteriostatic water in the carton covers all ten vials at this ratio.
