The pen format

Handling and storage

30iu or 100iu, and how the sizes differ

The iu figure describes the total activity in the cartridge, not the strength of a dose. A 30iu pen holds 30 international units in total; the 100iu pen holds more. Both are dialled in units of volume.

That matters because moving between them and keeping the same dial number does not continue your previous routine, it changes the amount delivered, with nothing visible on the dial to tell you. Work out the per-unit figure for the pen in front of you.

The 100iu pen is the better cost-per-iu proposition with fewer cartridge changes; the smaller one limits how long a single cartridge stays in use and suits anyone assessing tolerance first. An opened cartridge is on a clock, so a large pen used slowly can outlive its own in-use window.
