About Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and it is the principal antioxidant the body makes for itself. It is present in essentially every cell, at concentrations high enough that the ratio of its reduced to oxidised forms is used as a general marker of oxidative stress.
Its functions are broad rather than specific. It neutralises reactive oxygen species directly, it is the substrate for the glutathione peroxidase enzymes, and it is central to phase II liver detoxification, where it conjugates to compounds to make them water soluble enough to excrete. Paracetamol overdose is treated by replenishing it, which is about as direct a demonstration of its role as exists.
The reason it is given by injection is absorption. Oral glutathione is largely broken back down into its constituent amino acids in the gut, so the dose that reaches circulation intact is a small fraction of what was taken. Injection bypasses that, which is also why the cosmetic use for skin lightening, driven by its inhibition of tyrosinase and the shift from eumelanin to pheomelanin, is an injectable practice.

Where the evidence sits: glutathione is an endogenous molecule with unambiguous physiological importance, and intravenous use in paracetamol poisoning is established medicine. Evidence that supplementing it in healthy people produces the benefits marketed for it, particularly skin lightening, is weak, and the Philippine FDA and others have issued warnings about high dose cosmetic use. It holds no Europe licence for these purposes.

The pen format
Glutathione is dosed in tens of milligrams rather than micrograms, so the dial steps here are 5mg rather than a fraction of one. 1500mg gives 30 full 50mg draws from a sealed pen with no reconstitution.
