About HCG
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the placenta in pregnancy. Structurally its beta subunit is close enough to luteinising hormone that it binds and activates the same LH receptor, and that structural accident is the entire basis of its use outside obstetrics.
On the testis, that means HCG acts as an LH substitute. Where exogenous androgens have suppressed the axis and endogenous LH has fallen away, HCG can maintain Leydig cell function and testicular volume without waiting for the hypothalamic signal to return. Its half life is considerably longer than LH, which is why the research protocols space it in days rather than driving it to mimic a natural pulse.
What it does not supply is FSH. Spermatogenesis depends on both signals, so HCG alone maintains the androgen producing side of the testis while leaving the sperm producing side under-driven, which is the gap HMG exists to fill.
This is the same 5000 IU presentation stocked as a pharmaceutical vial, delivered instead as a solution in a graduated pen. The practical difference is that a reconstituted HCG vial commits you to using it within its stability window, whereas the pen is dialled and returned to the fridge.
